Fans of the MCU have grown to love the character of Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s friend, and main man. Happy might look like he’s ordinary at first, but a new theory from Reddit implies that Happy could be a member of a race that shape-shifts, who was assigned by Nick Fury to look after Tony Stark; yes you read it right, Happy might be a Skrull in disguise.

Making his first appearance in 2008’s Iron Man and then extending his stay through No Way Home, Happy was played by Marvel producer Jon Favreau — given Pepper Potts, Tony, and Peter Parker moral support and sometimes, logistical assistance for years. After Tony’s death in Endgame, Happy continued to support both, the daughters of Tony, Morgan, and Peter Parker as he comes to know what it actually meant to be Spider-Man without Stark’s mentorship. The theory places all the actions of Happy in a brand new light and while all his relationships might be real, his true motivation for helping Tony Stark takes us all the way back to the events of Captain Marvel, which was engineered by Nick Fury.

How could this be true?

This theory reveals that Nick Fury had worked with Howard Stark and had realized his son could be instrumental in protecting everyone in the coming future, planned to keep an eye on Tony once he had met the Skrulls in Captain Marvel: a Skrull who would shape-shift into human form, working its way into Tony’s circle and eventually watch over him, reporting all the findings to Nick Fury. Obviously, Fury and Happy never met onscreen until Far From Home, and although they didn’t really act like they knew each other, fans later discovered that Fury in Far From Home was Talos, a Skrull commander in disguise. The actual Fury was seen hiding out on a Skrull spaceship. Now, if Happy was a Skrull, he either did not know Fury had been replaced by Talos and was simply trying to play off the fact that they already knew each other, or he and Talos had recognized each other and ultimately agreed to keep their identities a hidden secret.

Some Marvel fans pointed out that Happy couldn’t have been a Skrull due to his attachment to Aunt May and their relationship, claiming Skrulls can’t really love humans, the same way we love each other. While this could hold a lot of truth, it has never been stated that Skrulls can’t go on to love humans, as Carol Danvers established a rapport with them during and even post-Captain Marvel. Similarly, Happy has already spent decades with Tony by the time Endgame happened, and even if Happy were a Skrull, it’d be quite reasonable to just assume that his friendship with Tony was quite genuine. Besides this, the theory is not really that far-fetched, given that MCU has already shown us that Skrulls can live among humans without being really discovered, for instance, Skrulls impersonating Fury and Maria Hill without Peter realizing their real identities.
