Although fastidious directors such as Stanley Kubrick discourage it, improvisation has a fascinating role in filmmaking. The typical Hollywood comedy will include a few sequences with semi-improvised riffs—especially since some of the comedy’s top actors, such as Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray, have improv backgrounds—but ad-libbed lines may also be used in drama. Still, it must be frustrating for screenwriters to spend years perfecting natural-sounding language just to have a movie star come up and make it all up on the spot. Worse, its haphazard inclusion frequently becomes far more popular than anything else in the film—and before you know it, people are putting it on posters, wearing it on T-shirts, and reciting it at parties. As a result, we at Animated Times felt it would be fun to let fans show off some of the finest improvised movie lines, so we compiled this list. Isn’t it intriguing? If so, let’s go over the list and figure out what these amazing impromptu lines were.

13. “You fuckin’ hit me with the phone, dick!” —Scream:

Skeet Ulrich’s fake-bloody hands at the end of Scream and whacked him in the head, according to Matthew Lillard. “My mum and dad are going to be very upset with me,” he added.

12. “You hit me in the ear! Ow, Christ, why the ear?” —Fight Club:

This was yet another genuine reaction to an unintentional on-set injury. When Brad Pitt and Edward Norton were filming their first fight sequence for Fight Club, Norton accidentally smacked Pitt in the ear. “[David] Fincher approached me and said, ‘Hit him, connect with him someplace,'” Norton explained to Jimmy Fallon. “I didn’t know what else to do, so I punched him in the ear.”

11. “Leslie, I typed your symptoms into the thing up here, and it says here you could have ‘network connectivity problems.'” —Parks and Recreation:

In Parks and Recreation, Chris Pratt improvised this phrase, irritating executive producer Michael Schur. At the 2012 Paley Fest, he stated, “I’m not joking-that made me furious as a writer.” He did it once while the camera was on him, and I believe it’s the best joke that’s ever been on our programmme.

10. The Snake Juice scene —Parks and Recreation:

This time, the entire cast joined in on the improv. The sequence in which everyone is high on Snake Juice and talks straight to the camera was an impromptu attempt to make Amy Poehler, who directed the episode, laugh.

9. “Fe-he-he-he-heeny!” —Boy Meets World:

Yes, the legendary Feeny Call was created by Boy Meets World actor Will Friedle. “You know, the Feeny call actually started with it just saying ‘Mr. Feeny’ in the script, and I kind of carried it from there to where it ballooned to be nine minutes long,” he told Cosplay & Coffee.

8. “I don’t wanna go.” —Avengers: Infinity War:

Tom Holland claimed that the Avengers: Infinity War franchise was inspired by an acting approach he employs. “I’ll recite a sentence over and over again if I’m trying to weep,” he stated. “For example, if I was in a scene and I was talking to someone and the undertone of the scenario was that I love them, I would say in my brain, ‘I love you so much, I love you so much, I love you so much, I love you so much, I love you so much, I love you so much, I love you so much.” “In that moment, it was ‘I don’t want to go,’ and I simply thought I’d say it out loud and it works,” he continued. If by “works,” he means “makes everyone cry every time they think about it,” then yes, it does!

7. “I am Iron Man.” —Iron Man:

Robert Downey Jr., Holland’s fellow Marvel actor, wasn’t expecting to utter this phrase at the top of the initial Iron Man, but it all ended up having a major influence on the MCU’s future. “That success [of Iron Man’s sudden ending] bolds the North American nation [at Marvel Studios] to travel farther in trusting ourselves to seek out [a] balance between keeping loyal to the books and also the spirit of the comics, but not being afraid to adapt, develop, and modify things,” producer Kevin Feige said at a point in time.

6. Oz and Willow’s animal crackers convo —Buffy:

On the Season 4 DVD commentary, executive producer Marti Noxon disclosed that everything after Oz’s words, “You have the best smile I’ve ever seen,” was improvised by Seth Green and Alyson Hannigan.

5. Robin Williams and Billy Crystal’s convo —Friends:

Not only were the lines improvised, but so was the whole cameo. Williams and Crystal were spotted on a neighboring set during the production of the Season 3 penultimate episode (probably filming Father’s Day, which was released in theatres the day after the show aired). They paid a visit to the Friends set and were requested to film a brief sequence, prompting the two comedy superstars to make up the tale about Crystal’s character sleeping with Williams’ character’s wife on the spot. It’s no surprise that the primary cast was on the edge of their seats the entire time.

4. “Here’s Johnny!” —The Shining:

Because director Stanley Kubrick didn’t grasp the joke, Jack Nicholson’s allusion to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson almost didn’t make it into The Shining.

3. “Hot damn!” —Brooklyn Nine-Nine:

When Amy arrives late for work for the first time ever on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the rest of the cast has a good time speculating as to why. Andre Braugher improvises a line for Captain Holt to join in on the fun, and when his guess is true, he lets out a very loud, very shocking “Hot Dam!”

2. “I know.” —The Empire Strikes Back:

In The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo was going to say to Princess Leia, “I love you too,” but Harrison Ford (correctly) decided “I know” was more genuine to his character.

1. “How come he don’t want me, man?” —The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air:

This has to be one of the saddest ad-libs ever. Will says that after being abandoned (again) by his biological father, and Will Smith credits the moment to James Avery, who portrayed Uncle Phil. “James Avery was unrelenting in his push for me to advance. “[He] would not give me an inch,” Smith said to Rap Radar in 2018. He was my role model. He just has the acting ability that I desired. ” He went on to say that when Avery hugged him after the line, he murmured to him, “That’s fucking acting right there.”
