After the huge success of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, director and writer James Gunn has now teased yet another spin-off show for an undisclosed member of last year’s The Suicide Squad. In the year 2016, the world was initially introduced to the team known as the ‘Suicide Squad’ by directors James Gunn and David Ayer. While the film was seen as a “financial success but a critical flop” and then its sequel, The Suicide Squad, which was released last year ended up throwing a spanner as an R-rated DC Comics movie — following in the footsteps of Margot Robbie’s solo film Birds of Prey (2020).

James Gunn to come up with another Suicide Squad spin-off!

The Suicide Squad ended up receiving some really positive reviews from critics and fans who praised James Gunn’s direction, script, and well, visual style; many fans also found the movie as an improvement over its 2016’s predecessor, eventually becoming the most-streamed DCEU film on HBO Max, until it was beaten by Mortal Kombat. However, the movie ended up losing out on a lot of box office profit, thanks to the several complications from the pandemic, followed by its availability on the streaming platform, HBO Max, and also its relationship to the initial Suicide Squad — which well, bombed — in every sense.

Now, director James Gunn has earlier teased a forthcoming project, focusing on yet another member of the DC’s Suicide Squad. Peacemaker made its way on HBO Max this month and has received overall positive feedback on its production values and humor until now. It is quite clear that Gunn is planning to ride that wave of prosperity. In a recent interview with Deadline, James Gunn claimed that another DCTV series was already underway, but he failed to provide more details at the present time.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe. I can’t quite say. I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker; it won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

Now if we narrow down the candidates, it seems quite unlikely that the show would be a Harley Quinn one, especially as the character has already featured in a lot of solo material in the DCEU, and alongside it. The most likely contender right now is Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, as Robert DuBois has quite an interesting dynamic between them in Cena’s Peacemaker and also, in The Suicide Squad. Bloodsport turned out to be the real dark horse, managing in capturing the admiration of several DC fans al across, so there shouldn’t be any objections to yet another solo series on a ruthless (yet a big-hearted) mercenary.

Since James Gunn steered away from the unknown series coming in the same genre, the aspects of comedy give us a much better hint as to who it could be. Yet again, Harley Quinn is an extremely comical character but frankly, if this series isn’t based on Bloodsport, the choice will become much harder, since a solo run for any other Suicide Squad member seems quite pointless.
