It Was A Huge Mistake- DC Comics

The shocking appearance of Batman’s p*nis in Batman: Damned under the DC’s Black Label helped DC to launch their new label with huge publicity. However, the publishers have now stated get it was not to grab attention or promote the marketing, but just a mistake made by them; something that they will make sure never happens again.

The new DC Black Label is a prestige comic imprint that has many best writers and artists from the industry, working together to publish boundary-pushing graphic novels. After showing Batman’s p*nis in one of their recent issues, the fans assumed that DC would censor it in future versions. However, now DC has announced that they will not be repeating the mistake.

The digital versions of the comic have already censored it, but the scene did cause a lot of stir in the comic book world. DC officials were clear that nudity is not what their new Black Label is about, and the publishers reiterated the same at the recently held New York Comic Con.

When asked about DC’s decision to censor it after the issue Batman: Damned #1 was published, Jim Lee revealed that it was an error, and the same will not be repeated again.

…there were some production errors that led to the book being published the way it was… that ended up being a big story. But thankfully people were very pleased with the story and the content, the beautiful art, and the story that Brian and Lee had come up with really resonated with readers.

It’s made us, certainly, look at what Black Label is and think about whether these elements are additive to the story. And that’s something that we’ll be mindful of going forward, because I don’t think we want necessarily a repeat of what happened with the first issue.

This may not be believed by those who see this as a mere publicity stunt, but co-publisher Dan DiDio denied it saying:

“It’s something we wish never happened, because it really took the attention away from what we thought was quality storytelling, and that’s not the way we see this imprint.

Whether this was a publicity stunt or a publication error, one can believe DiDio’s words as an honest and upright assessment of the whole Bat-nudity scenario. DiDio wants to bring out more “mature” series like The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, but the first Batman issue under the DC Black Label with full frontal nudity definitely doesn’t send the right message.
