Before this year began, Brendan Fraser was nowhere to be seen but this year has seen him making a return to the big screen in a big way. A wholesome video of the actor went viral, not too long ago, and ever since, fans have been cheering the actor, waiting eagerly for the news of his comeback. While his fans cannot wait to see The Mummy star’s return, the actor did confirm a return as Firefly in the upcoming Batgirl by Warner Bros and DC.

Is Brendan Fraser Returning As Rick O’ Conell?

However, it seems like other studios have also taken notice of the actor, and thanks to some inside sources, we have come to learn that thanks to the actors’ fans railing for his return, Universal Studios is considering him to return in The Mummy 4 as Rick O’ Connell.

The actor, as we mentioned above, is set to portray the role of villainous Firefly in DC’s Batgirl film. Brendan Fraser is also reportedly playing a lawyer against big actors like Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. For now, it seems quite doubtful that the actor has enough on his plate to sign up for The Mummy 4, if it’s handled well by Universal Pictures. Needless to say, fans would love to see him return as Rick in The Mummy franchise. However, there are some questions unanswered. For instance, what is the story that the studio is looking forward to pursuing in the sequel? Do they have other cast members on board yet? Most importantly, it would be great if Universal manages to get back Rachel Weisz as Evelyn with Stephen Sommers helming the film.

There Have Been Plans For The Mummy 4 Earlier Too!

The last Mummy film came out in 2008, which starred Brendan Fraser, but without Stephen Sommers or Rachel Weisz who previously worked on the first two films. The film did well at the box office but wasn’t received too well among fans. Eventually, Universal rebooted the franchise with Tom Cruise. This film’s tone was totally different from that of Fraser’s and it didn’t turn out as an ideal restart that the studio was looking to make for their universe. However, if we believe reports before Universal went on with the Tom Cruise reboot, they had a great idea for Mummy 4 with Brendan Fraser himself.

While we still don’t know if Universal still has their idea on board, but what’s known is that they could have a solid start for the sequel. Going by the reports, The Mummy 4 was titled as The Mummy: Rise of the Aztec. Antonio Banderas was originally intended to play the villain opposite Brendan Fraser’s lead character. The movie would have seen O’Connell’s traveling to South America for a new adventure. The villain was supposed to be yet another undead character, like the ones faced by Brendan Fraser in the past films.

While the first two Mummy films were shot in Egypt, if Universal uses the original idea, then The Mummy 4: Rise of the Aztec might not take place in Egypt – becoming the second film in the franchise to do so, as the third film in the installment took place in China. If Universal wants the film to be as good as the initial two films, then shifting to Egypt might be a fine idea.

Whatever Universal is planning, Brendan Fraser’s comeback will be really exciting and interesting to watch for die-hard Fraser and The Mummy franchise fans.
