Avengers: Endgame has all the hype needed to make it a hit. Theories and speculations are all over the internet with people trying to figure out how the Avengers will save the world. But at the crux of every theory are the infinity stones.
The main issue here is what will happen to the infinity stones once everything is said and done. Can they be destroyed? Or will they be scattered again? Comics can shed some light on it:
The first thing to remember is that generally, the infinity stones can’t be destroyed. In every universe of Marvel’s Multiverse, there is a version of the infinity stones. Like in the Ultimate Universe, there are eight Infinity stones. That’s four each for two infinity gauntlets.
Can The Infinity Stones Be Destroyed?
To begin this explanation, you will have to know about The Illuminati. They are a secretive organization comprised of the most intelligent and politically supreme superhumans in the Marvel Universe. In 2007’s New Avengers: Illuminati #2, it was Mr. Fantastic who thought up a plan of gathering the Infinity Stones so as to safeguard them. But at one point, Mr. Fantastic does try to wish the Infinity Stones away.
The idea in itself wasn’t bad but the Infinity Gauntlet can’t destroy itself. So they did the sensible thing and instead of keeping the Gauntlet together, the six Illuminati members opted to take one Infinite Stone each and keep it a secret.
But They Were Destroyed…Just This One Time
Captain America made this miracle happen…by accident.
When the Illuminati again brought the infinity stones in one place, it was to save earth from an incoming incursion. That incursion was another Marvel Universe in the Multiverse which was going to collide with the main Marvel universe.
The results of such an action would have been catastrophic. So Captain America, the strong-willed of them all; used the gauntlet to push away an entire universe. When he was done with it, the Gauntlet broke.
There Is Another Way And It Is By The Infinity Watch
In 2015’s Secret Wars event, the entirety of the Marvel Universe was re-created once again. So the Infinity Stones came into existence once again. Here, they were given to a group of heroes called the Infinity Watch. They were charged with defending then against all who came for it.
The original team comprised of Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Moondragon (a telepathic hero), Pip the Troll and the last person you would expect- Thanos. This short-lived team was assembled by Doctor Strange and they came together in Marvel’s lead up to Infinity Wars in summer.
In the aftermath of the Infinity Wars, the stones were scattered once again (as this is what is generally done to them). But there was a twist- Adam Warlock made use of the Soul stone to bestow every Infinity Stone with a soul. His idea was to make the stones sentient so that they could hide.
What Will The Movie Do?
The movie can opt for any of these paths, none of these paths or even all of these paths. There is as much a chance of Captain America using the Gauntlet as is of the Infinity Stones being scattered again.
Avengers: Endgame opens in theatres on 26th April.
