Mortal Kombat which came out last year wasn’t really incredible, but it did manage to deliver the goods. The characters of the popular game were brought to the screen quite accurately, with all the fight scenes being fun and, as promised by the makers, the onscreen fatalities were brutal and enjoyable. It has been up to a year since we saw its release, and ow fans have been clamouring for a sequel announcement.

When is Mortal Kombat 2 Coming?

And well, not all good things take time as that day finally came yesterday, with New Line Cinema announcing that Mortal Kombat 2 is officially underway, with Moon Knight and Fantastic Four writer Jeremy Slater being tasked with the scripting duties.

The sophomore Mortal Kombat’s storyline was very different from that of the games, but its sequel is expected to follow the 1993’s Mortal Kombat II by relocating the entire action to Outworld, even pitting our heroes against the evil hammer-wielding emperor (and the nightmarishly final boss), fans know as Shao Khan.

Now, the creator of Mortal Kombat has chipped in with a casting tip:

Dwayne Johnson would probably knock this out of the park, and fans always enjoy it when he succesfully sheds the charismatic hero persona he has to get a little more sinister. Moreover, Khan’s reputation for mocking those he kills under his gigantic hammer would be a perfect fit for Johnson.

Unfortunately, this is certainly some wishful thinking. Dwayne Johnson is seen as one of the busiest people in Hollywood at the moment, and we really doubt that he’d play the villainous role in a relatively smaller franchise. But remember, stranger things have happened before and you never know.

Meanwhile, there’s still some hope that we got more information on the Mortal Kombat sequel soon. The final moments of the 2021 original film showcased Johnny Cage coming to the big screen, hyping all fans to find out which actor will be eventually playing the game’s most egomaniacal martial artist.
