Yet another Spider-Man spin-off by Sony Pictures Spider-Man spinoff titled Madame Web has finally found its star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Social Network and Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson is set all set to play the eponymous character.

There have been two Madames Web in the Marvel comics until now. The very first, Cassandra Webb — was co-created by Denny O’Neill and John Romita Jr., making its debut in 1980’s The Amazing Spider-Man #210. The character was shown as an elderly, mutant who had suffered from a neuromuscular disease that tragically left her on a life support system, although her abilities allowed her to still function and work as a medium.

After the demise of Webb, she went on to pass her powers to Julia Carpenter, who happens to be the second incarnation of Spider-Woman. She went on to become the second version of Madame Web in the comics. It’s still quite unclear which version the movie will be centering on, but given the age of Johnson in relation to both the characters, it seems like she’ll play Carpenter.

Sony Pictures had also announced a Madame Web film back in 2019 as part of its slate of MCU-adjacent projects. The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script that was penned by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

“Well, there’s the Marvel Universe, which is one container and then there are the Spider-Verse movies, which are different and then there’s the other universe where the Sony characters are in,” longtime Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal recently explained when asked about Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff films such as MoribusVenom and Madame Web and how they correlate with the MCU. “We all are very respectful of each other and work together and make sure that we’re only being additive.”

Obviously, since these comments from Amy Pascal have come in, the lines have been definitely blurred thanks to No Way Home, which had a massive opening about the multiversal floodgates even including the much-anticipated roles of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprise Spider-Men from past versions of the film franchise.

“One of my favorite things to do at the minute is to go online and watch fans’ reactions to you guys coming in that one scene in particular,” Holland said while discussing No Way Home with Garfield and Holland. “I don’t think I could ever have imagined it as being so well received by everyone. I mean, I guess I had an idea that people would love this movie, but in no way, shape or form could I have thought it was going to be as big as it has been. And it’s been… only the last couple weeks that I have sort of really come back to reality and come home and started to face real-world problems, and it feels like we’ve been on some sort of really weird dream. It feels really strange.”

Madame Web is yet to receive a release date from Marvel.
