The first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix premiered officially recently and has since excited X-Men fans all over. One of the scenes in the trailer feature a sequence of X-Men attending a funeral, presumably of one of their own. The scene also shows the grieving mutant team blaming Professor X for letting it happen. However, the question remains: Who exactly died in the film?

Now, by the look of those present at the graveside ceremony, it’s clear that Cyclops, Storm and Nightcrawler are alive. All these characters have appeared as their grown-up selves in other previous X-Men films and thus, it’s safe to say that all of them will survive the events of the present day epilogue film. Beast can also be seen at the funeral and is also heard blaming Xavier for his handling of Jean Grey. Beast presumably leaves Xavier and joins Magento’s team.

However, as Beast is seen at the X-Mansion in X-Men: Days of Future Past, it’s certain that he will survive the events of Dark Phoenix and end his emotional rift with Charles.

Now, a possibility to die here could be Magneto’s son, Quicksilver. Quicksilver became an instant fan-favourite after his appearances in Days of Future Past an Apocalypse. Moreover, his death would rightly explain his disappearance from in the original X-Men trilogy and the Days of Future Past epilogue.

Another candidate could be Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. The character has had a personal history with both, Beast and Magneto and is not seen at the funeral either. While the character did appear in the original X-Men trilogy, her death in Dark Phoenix could be one of the ripple effects caused by Wolverine during the events of Days of Future Past.

Lastly, the grave could be more symbolic than literal as the trailer offers a look at the mutant community of Genosha, which was founded by Magneto in Apocalypse. It’s possible that Jean Grey’s explodable abilities caused the deaths of its residents. The grave could be occupied by more than one fallen mutant, maybe an entire society.

Dark Phoenix seems like the darkest X-Men film by Fox till date. More questions will be answered as the film inches closer to its release date. For now, stay tuned for more.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit the theatres on February 14, 2019.
