In JLA/Avengers crossover comics, the Avengers confronted the ruler of Apokolips and after they met him they said he “looks worse than Thanos.” This indicated that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Marvel saw Darkseid as a better villain than the Mad Titan. The two characters are quite comparable as they also use similar weapons (the Infinity Gauntlet and The Anti-Life Equation).

Thanos was initially based on Metron from the New Gods and made his first appearance in Iron Man #55, where he was much skinnier than how fans know him today. He was then given a bulkier look inspired by Darkseid after editor Roy Thomas told the villain’s creator Jim Starlin, “If you’re going to steal one of the New Gods, at least rip off Darkseid, the really good one!”

JLA/Avengers crossover comics were written by Kurt Busiek and George Perez by Marvel Comics and DC Comics. It featured an amazing plot, heroes from both universes end up in front of Darkseid, who has acquired Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet.

Hawkeye can’t believe what he’s seeing as the New God wields the Infinity Stones, as he admits Darkseid is “worse than Thanos if that’s even possible.” This part in the comic indicates that Marvel admitted that, with the Infinity Gauntlet, Darkseid is an even better villain than Thanos.

Darkseid was unable to use the gauntlet with the infinity stones because the gems were only designed to work in the Marvel Universe and not the DC universe. As a result, Darkseid discards the glove.

It’s surprising how Marvel was okay with this

It’s actually baffling how Marvel was okay with an Avenger admitting that Darkseid, with the infinity gauntlet, is a better villain than Thanos. The similarities make sense as the two universes are connected but directly admitting it was quite unusual.
