Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could introduce Man-Thing, one of the most popular monster characters in Marvel. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s plot involving the multiverse, the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel looks forward to delving deeper into the overall concept of parallel universes.

The film will see actor Benedict Cumberbatch in at least three versions of Doctor Strange. The cast of the 2016 original film will reprise their roles, with Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor returning as Christine Palmer, Wong, and Mordo. Elizabeth Olsen will also join the film’s cast as Wanda Maximoff with MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. However, another new addition can function as a welcome fan service, propelling the MCU in a new and interesting direction.

No Way Home proved that the multiverse can be used as a plot device, opening infinite possibilities for both, character introductions and fan service. If all rumors are true, Doctor Strange 2 will make really good use of these possibilities. However, there is a character who hasn’t been present in all rumors and the one that fits the multiversal theme better than any character – Man-Thing.

Who Is Man-Thing?

Will we see Man-Thing's debut in Doctor Strange 2?
Man-Thing in Marvel Comics

Man-Thing was introduced in 1971, boasting a 50+-year-old history. However, before it became Man-Thing, Ted Sallis worked as a biochemistry professor at the University of Empire State. After working for the United States Army for a short while, Sallis was ultimately recruited by SHIELD to work on a project whose goal was to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that once gave Steve Rogers aka Captain America his powers.

However, Sallis got tracked down by A.I.M. and he injected himself with a version of the serum that was untested while he was trying to flee. This led him to crash his car into a swamp. Sallis was presumed dead forcing A.I.M. gave up the hunt for him, even though his body was not found.

In real, Sallis was alive and the serum in his body combined with the swamp’s magical power turned him into Man-Thing. He went on to take the lives of the A.I.M. agents and then returned to his swamp where he discovered that there was so much more to it than reptiles and mud.

Why Could Man-Thing Show Up In Doctor Strange 2?

 Man Thing's debut in MCU
Doctor Strange 2 can be perfect for Man Thing’s debut in MCU

Man-Thing is the guardian of the Nexus of All Realities, which is a multiversal hub, making his appearance in Doctor Strange 2 very likely. With Strange set to travel the multiverse in the film, it is possible that they try and seek out the Nexus as a means of transport. America Chavez is the only character who can travel between universes, however, she is still a teenager and is unlikely to have full control over her powers. This might force Doctor Strange to look for more reliable ways of inter-dimensional travel. Apart from this, Doctor Strange 2 is believed to dabble more with themes of horror and a swamp monster might just hit it right.

There is also that one shot in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer which hints at the Nexus of All Realities coming into play. A few frames featured Strange, Chavez, and Wanda staring at a cathedral through a mysterious doorway. This might be MCU’s take on the Nexus rather than using the swamp from the comics.
