Endgame Writers Reveal Original Plans For Smart Hulk And That Anticipated Hulk vs Thanos Fight
Hulk is one of the most underrated Marvel characters. His journey has kind of been tumultuous as well as incomplete. He went from a man trying to control a monster, to the monster controlling him and then later on, the monster abandoning him when he was needed the most. In time, both the entities were able to merge, gain control and become a single being and just in time to fight Thanos. Yet, Hulk’s topsy-turvy storyline and his actions have embarrassed the Avengers many times. It’s so bad that even Thor and Doctor Strange have called him out. Take a look below.

Hulk: Earth’s Embarrassing Avenger
Lets begin with how Hulk never really got the rematch he deserved with Thanos. Undoing the snap is pretty much the closest he came to giving Thanos a payback for the beating the celestial being gave him in Avengers: Infinity War. But apparently that wasn’t the plot the creators were going with originally. A concept artwork revealed at this year’s D23 Expo confirmed that there were indeed plans at some point in the creative process for Hulk to get a second shot at Thanos, but those plans were abandoned. Writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus explained why the rematch didn’t happen:
“The battle had all sorts of stuff in it. I don’t know how long that battle is now, but it’ not as long as you might think. I know a lot of people were saying they can’t wait for [Hulk and Thanos’] rematch. Well, that would’ve made sense had he not become Smart Hulk. He’s a whole different thing, and that’s not what drives him. So we never thought, ‘Oh, he really is trying to get a crack at Thanos now.'”

Smart Hulk Was Originally Going To Be Introduced In Infinity War
They also revealed that Smart Hulk was originally going to be introduced at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. But the idea was nixed because it was felt to be the wrong tone for the movie. Markus said:
“It was this victory when we were headed toward a crushing defeat, and it was tone-deaf. But we had already shot Endgame, where he was already Smart Hulk. Imagine the first act of Endgame, he’s Smart Hulk in all of those scenes — meaning when he goes to kill Thanos when they’re sitting around the compound when Tony’s returned — so that required some adjusting. And it also meant that we could use the five years as the transition, hint that he’s got problems coalescing, and in the five years he figures it out. You have a couple of lines about gamma radiation and he’s eating pancakes, and off you go.”
Seems a lil bit lazy, gotta tell ya.
