Eternals is under serious attack not from Deviants but from the review bombing. Eternals is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is one of the most anticipated films, after all, it is the first MCU film with an Academy Award-winning director at the helm and an all-star cast. As of now only selected people have been able to see the movie at premieres and reviews are currently mixed.

Eternals is currently the lowest-rated MCU film on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s still a fresh rating.

Eternals is set to feature a lot of firsts for the MCU.  Feige along with Zhao and the studio has discussed much of the film’s diverse cast and strives for inclusion and is all set to feature the first openly gay superhero in the MCU aka Phastos and the first deaf superhero aka Makkari.

Zhao is hoping that Marvel Studios does not censor the movie for overseas audiences. Marvel Studios is taking efforts to make their films more accessible and diverse so everyone can see themselves reflected as a superhero.

But sadly, some people have taken issue with these things and have decided to review bomb the film. According to The Direct, IMDb’s rating for Eternals was flooded with negative reviews a week before the film’s theatrical release and has over 400 1-star reviews. The common point of criticism was the inclusion of a gay kiss and the film’s LGBTQIA+ representation. IMDb has removed the audience rating section of Eternals until after the film’s theatrical release when people have actually seen it.

Review bombing is an act of a large group of people making a coordinated effort on review forums to give negative reviews to a product (often without using/ seeing it) to give negative publicity to the same.

Rotten Tomatoes removed their audience score after Captain Marvel faced a similar attack. Movies like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot have all been victims of review bombing.

Despite all the hate, Captain Marvel grossed $426 million at the domestic box office and over $1 billion worldwide and became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2019 worldwide. Star Wars: The Last Jedi also grossed $1.333 billion worldwide and was the highest-grossing film at the 2017 domestic and worldwide box office.

Marvel Studios shouldn’t be affected by the reaction to Eternals especially from an audience that hasn’t seen it yet!
