Many fans are wondering about the X-Men franchise’s future after Fox-Disney merger deal gets over. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is already slated for a February release next year and now it seems like the long-planned Channing Tatum starrer Gambit is also reportedly under development.

This project was recently teased by producer Simon Kinberg who went on to reveal a surprising tone for Gambit that might surprise many fans. During an interview with IGN, Kinberg stated, “When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

This comes off as a surprising statement from Kinberg, who is also helming Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Gambit has already gone through numerous directors, including Gore Verbinski and Doug Liman. However, the film is yet again without a director, making this revelation by Kinberg even more surprising. Kinberg also assured fans that irrespective of the film’s direction, Gambit will still be an X-Men film.

“You know, when I say a romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely,” Kinberg said. “It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

Obviously, many fans may assume that these plans by Fox could be moot with the sale of 20th Century Fox. It was earlier revealed by Walt Disney chairman, Bob Iger that all Marvel-owned properties currently acquired by Fox, like X-Men and Fantastic Four, will directly go under the banner of Marvel Studios.

However, irrespective of the deal, Fox and Kinberg are moving ahead with the business. “Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year,” Kinberg said.
