We’re almost two-thirds of the way through Season 1 of Hawkeye on Disney+ and the series has been offering us surprise revelations at every possible turn. Among these, was the return of Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh who appeared at the end of the fourth episode. While we have only been graced with a few minutes of her presence in the MCU, it’s safe to say that fans are really happy to have her back – and well, a few of the directors on the series feel the same. While appearing on an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hawkeye directors Bertie and Bert praised Florence for “being brave” with her approach to the character, to a few “fun” and “inspiring” events.

“Watching her decision-making and being really brave with the character not only was inspiring, but also just a lot of fun,” Bert revealed, before joking, “What’s great about her is she’s batsh-t crazy. She’s like us!”

“To bring her story into this was such a dream come true,” Bert said elsewhere in the interview.

“Being a fan of Florence and what she had done with Yelena’s character, [it] was very exciting,” Bertie echoed.

Florence Pugh’s return as Yelena was confirmed last year itself, and the post-credits scene of Black Widow revealed the reason behind her return – revenge for the death of Natasha as Valentina sends her to kill Clint who is thought to be responsible for Natasha’s death.

“We had a moment together where we were shooting and something went wrong,” Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld recently explained to Cosmopolitan. “There was no recovering from it. I started laughing so hard that somebody thought I was crying … and I just remember a flood of people rushing in and being like, ‘Is everyone okay?’ And I’m literally facedown on the ground, just hysterically laughing. Mind you, we were in a scene that was in no way, shape, or form meant to be at all funny. We really did have a wonderful time together.”

Hawkeye sees Clint Barton in New York post-Thanos’ Blip and he must work together with Kate Bishop, a young archer who aspires to become Hawkeye. The duo confronts Clint’s enemies from his dubious past as Ronin, so that he could be back with his family for Christmas. Hawkeye also stars Fra Fee as The Clown, Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Alaqua Cox as Echo, Zahn McCarnon as William Lopez and Tony Dalton as Swordsman.

Hawkeye is streaming on Disney+ now, with a new episode debuting every Wednesday.
