This year has been a resurgence for Marvel Studios as the MCU is exploring uncharted grounds with exciting storylines and new characters. But unfortunately, it has been a case of hit and miss for most of the movies and TV shows. After starting the year with WandaVision, Marvel Studios wrapped it up with some action on the holiday season with Hawkeye starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld. While the show has received positive reception for its fast pacing and grounded storyline, the season finale definitely left a sour taste after weeks of building the big climax.

Back in 2015, Netflix had launched Daredevil starring Charlie Cox as the Man Without Fear. A dramatically different approach from the then existing Marvel TV shows, Daredevil brought in a sense of realism and darkness that has sadly, never been able to replicate till now. As the show deservedly received critical acclaim, Netflix further built a mini-universe that was a part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet, never really felt to be cut out from the same cloth. Following Daredevil‘s thundering success, Netflix further released Jessica JonesLuke CageIron FistThe Punisher, and The Defenders which received various levels of reception but nevertheless had the same gritty and grounded approach still intact. Unfortunately, Daredevil was canceled back in 2018 just days after the release of the third season, followed by all the existing Marvel shows on Netflix. Now, after years of speculation, the MCU has finally acknowledged the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. But sadly, the MCU doesn’t really seem to be prepared for Daredevil.

After making a brief cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, there has been no further news on the appearance of Daredevil in the near future. However, Hawkeye introduced Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) as the major antagonist of the series further confirming that the MCU is gradually bringing everyone into the fold. But sadly, the Wilson Fisk from Netflix’s Daredevil and Disney+’s Hawkeye were two completely different personalities. Marvel Studio’s attempt to make everything appropriate for families and children definitely did not work for the Kingpin, which doesn’t sound very hopeful for the future of the likes of Daredevil and the Punisher.

Despite being comic-book superheroes, both Daredevil and the Punisher have been quite different from the other mainstream characters such as Iron Man and Captain America. As street-level heroes, these characters face much more real issues that get ugly and dark quite frequently. One of the major reasons for Netflix Daredevil‘s staggering success was the show’s ability to become a gritty, realistic, and grounded show despite having a superhero as its main protagonist. Filled with an ample amount of blood, gore, and realistic fight sequences, the show never really shied away from real issues which were further followed by the rest of Netflix’s Marvel TV shows. But with everything under the control of Marvel Studios, fans should be apprehensive about the future of Daredevil, and other similar characters in the future.
