While this might not impress a lot of fans, Marvel has finally confirmed that Doctor Strange is not the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No Way Home is out in theaters now and the movie confirmed that Wong is the new Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU and not Doctor Strange. This should come as a surprise to those fans who expected Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to follow his What If…? arc which sees him becoming the replacement for Ancient One. However, No Way Home proves that Strange is still on his way to magical development.

Why Is Wong The Sorcerer Supreme In MCU, And Not Doctor Strange?

Although Marvel has been quite reluctant to introduce magic to MCU, Doctor Strange opened all the floodgates. There were some characters with magical powers – like Asgardians – but that didn’t have the same narrative dynamic that Doctor Strange by Scott Derrickson introduced. Doctor Strange brought in fast travel, time distortion, dimensional manipulation, and one of the most powerful individuals in the MCU, The Ancient One. When she died, it was expected that Doctor Strange will follow her way.

No Way Home confirms that Wong is the new Sorcerer Supreme after Endgame. This is revealed to Peter by Doctor Strange. He reveals that Wong was given the position as Strange himself was blipped out for five years. The film suggests that Wong doesn’t deserve the promotion – with Strange mocking him as incompetent – but is it fair?

If you think about it, Wong becoming the Sorcerer Supreme does make sense, given Strange’s lack of magical experience and the fact that he is sometimes impulsive and volatile. If he was the Sorcerer Supreme, Strange would be too powerful to hold any sense of threat against him. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness had already teased Strange’s biggest threat – evil Strange himself. In simple words, Wong deserves to be Sorcerer Supreme more than Doctor Strange. It was already established in Shang Chi that Wong has become an integral part of the new Avengers for phase 4 and ahead.

Wong’s role as Sorcerer Supreme is confusing, keeping in mind his appearance in Shang Chi earlier this year. Firstly, he participates in an underground fighting tournament and has a surprisingly odd relationship with Tim Roth’s Abomination. This doesn’t sit well with the expectations of a Sorcerer Supreme. The post-credits scene of Shang Chi sets up Wong as a sort of recruiter of Avengers. However, the shot of him deeply wounded in the Multiverse of Madness trailer suggests that things might not go well-planned for Wong.

While the Sorcerer Supreme is immortal, they can be killed by more nefarious things than old age and disease. Wong could be in danger and the title of Sorcerer Supreme has passed between people in the comics (and now in the MCU too). The good news is that the title can also be surrendered if Strange proves his mettle in the film. If No Way Home is anything to go by, we can assure you that there is still a long way to go for Doctor Strange.
