Steve Rogers really got a great exit from the MCU. We always reckoned that he might return at some point in the MCU, but none of us expected his return to happen anytime soon. Chris Evans bid a heartfelt goodbye to the character. But when asked about his return, he said that it’s not a hard no, but it’s not a very eager yes either! This was last year. But recently, Deadline shocked the world with their report of Evans’ MCU return as Captain America. In fact, even Evans seemed to be as surprised as everyone else. Apparently, it was news to him as well.

Well, many MCU actors (Tatiana Maslany, Hailee Steinfeld, etc.) have denied their factual casting reports in recent times. So, we can’t really take Evans’ tweet at face value. The news of his return spread like wildfire on the internet, so he could have tweeted this just to maintain a bit of secrecy around his role. The bottom line is that the report of his return in one, or even two future MCU projects could be a hundred percent accurate. Given the timing of it, we could see the return of Old Man Steve Rogers in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He could return to give Sam a bit of advice. But Chris Evans still has more to give to this never-dying role. Besides old man Steve, we could see the return of young Cap in several different ways:

Multiverse Cap

Since the MCU is taking a deep dive into the multiverse, we could definitely see a version of Captain America that is from a different universe. Rumors suggest that an evil Captain America might show up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Avengers: Endgame only had Steve Rogers make a “Hail Hydra” joke. But seeing an evil Captain America in his prime could prove to be kinda nice, don’t you think?

Skrull Cap

Skrull Captain America

It’s unlikely that a big name like Steve Rogers would show up in MCU’s Secret Invasion series as a Skrull. But then again, Marvel could do anything for shock value. Maybe a Skrull Cap could return in Captain Marvel 2 or any other Phase 5 project instead. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Flashbacks or Prequel Stories

There are quite a few MCU stories that could have flashbacks of Steve Rogers taking place before the events of Avengers: Endgame. In fact, the story of Cap’s Secret Avengers days is still untold. So, a flashback scene, or an MCU prequel could totally bring back Cap, and that too with his glorious beard.

Time Travel

We have to keep in mind that Deadline’s report specifically mentioned that Chris Evans might only return for cameos or supporting roles. So, we should not expect a Captain America 4 which would explore how Steve Rogers returned all Infinity Stones back to where they were taken from. In fact, we’ve already suggested that this time travel mission might have been very easy for Steve. Instead, any future story involving a young Steve Rogers should tell us what really happened after he decided to live a retired life with Peggy. How exactly did he get the new shield which he later passed on to Sam?

Can Falcon lead the Avengers as Captain America

Joe Russo confirmed that Cap created an alternate timeline when he went back to live his life with Peggy. But knowing Steve Rogers, it’s really hard for us to imagine that he just lived a non-happening life in secret. It’s almost impossible to keep Cap out of the fight. He himself said, “If I see a situation pointed south, I can’t ignore it. Sometimes I wish I could.” Now I’m not suggesting that Cap completely changed his new timeline by saving his friend Bucky from Hydra and preventing Howard Stark’s assassination, among other things. Maybe he did all that. Or maybe he just let everything run its course knowing that things will be fine in the future.

But my theory is that there was a specific reason as to why old Steve did not tell Sam Wilson about his life with. That’s because his younger self probably wasn’t done fighting yet. Maybe this younger version might be brought back from his timeline to Sam’s future. Old Steve would obviously remember it, but telling Sam about it could change what happens in Sam’s future. This is the same reason why Doctor Strange did not tell Tony Stark about the winning outcome. His exact words were, “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.”

captain america Kang

Just imagine this theory – Someone from Sam’s future might bring young Steve back from the alternate timeline to fight Kang or some other villain in Avengers 5. Considering that it is a time travel mission, and Kang’s arc is in development, Cap could be brought back to take him on. That’s how he might make his triumphant return in Avengers 5. He could have a “Bring Me Thanos” moment of his own. The looks on Sam, Bucky, and the faces of others could be priceless when Steve shows up to save the day.

captain america mjolnir

Captain America recently lifted Mjolnir. He actually retired when he was at his strongest. So, we’d love to see this Mjolnir wielding Cap make his return. And if he follows the time travel theory that we’ve just mentioned, then the MCU could add more to Cap’s story (just like Evans wanted). He won’t even be breaking any time travel rules as he could just help the New Avengers defeat Kang, and then return to his retired life.

Let’s wait and see whether Marvel is going to bring Young Steve Rogers back. How do you find our theory at the end? Tell us in the comments down below.
