It appears that Emilia Clarke is not one of the millions of viewers who watched the first season of HBO’s hit series House of the Dragon. Nearly 10 million people tuned in to watch the network’s return to Westeros on August 21, 2022, when the first episode of the new series aired. The series’ viewership numbers increased over time, and after it won the Best Television Series (Drama) prize at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, it also appeared to be able to win over critics.

However, not everyone seems to enjoy watching the show, which chronicles the events leading up to the beginning of House Targaryen’s decline and the Dance of Dragons’ succession war. Even though Game of Thrones follows the ancestors of her character, Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia Clarke claims to have not watched a single minute. She has actively avoided it, in fact. The Game of Thrones alum explained why she finds it difficult to watch HBO’s Targaryen-focused prequel series.

Why does Emilia Clarke avoid ‘House of the Dragon’

Although HBO made the right decision to revisit the universe that George R.R. Martin created, Emilia Clarke might not be interested in watching House of the Dragon. The Murder Manual actress, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, recently defended her decision to skip the prequel series House of the Dragon. Based on the yet-to-be-completed Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, the wildly popular fantasy adventure series made its debut in 2011. The eight-season run of GoT came to an end in 2019, and the show’s prequel spinoff, House of the Dragon, has since gained similar popularity.

In an interview with Variety, Emilia Clarke affirmed that she has not watched House of the Dragon and that she has no desire to. The actor referred to the concept as “weird” and explained that she wouldn’t be able to sit through the strange yet familiar world. Having read everything, Clarke had to say,

I just can’t do it. It’s so weird. It’s so strange. No! Can you [forgive me]? It’s too weird. I’m so happy it’s happening.”

We feel bad for House of the Dragon supporters. Even, the mother of dragons doesn’t bother to know about Targaryen’s history.

What has the House of the Dragon‘s other GOT veterans said?

Game of Thrones quickly rose to fame around the world after its debut. Expectations for House of the Dragon were high given how the series had ended. Eventually, many former cast members of GoT voiced their opinions on the program, with the majority praising it and describing it as a worthy successor. Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington, who played King of the North Jon Snow, praised the prequel series and its co-showrunner Miguel Sapochik, calling it “fantastic.” Aside from identifying Lord Jason and Ser Tyland Lannister as his character’s ancestors and calling them “smug.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jamie Lannister, also singled out the twins as being the inspiration for his character. George Martin, a producer on the show, praised the cast’s collective performances as well as the adaptation.

House of the Dragon depicts the conflict that splits the House Targaryen and causes the interfamilial conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons, which takes place nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Audiences will witness the full might of the House Targaryen in action when the Dance of the Dragons begins in 2024. This will emerge with the solid return of House of Dragon season 2.
