A new video from Batman sees the Riddler assaulting a funeral and delivering a message to the Caped Crusader. Similarly to Frank Miller’s iconic comic Batman: Year One, Matt Reeves’ next remake will chronicle the early years of Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The Batman will put Bruce Wayne against renowned villains from his rogues’ gallery, including John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Colin Farrell’s Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot, as he achieves the title of “World’s Greatest Detective.” The major nemesis of Batman will be Paul Dano’s Edward Naston, also known as “The Riddler” (played by Paul Dano). The Riddler is a serial murderer who prowls Gotham City, tying duct tape over his victims’ skulls and leaving clues for Batman in the grim and grounded world of The Batman. As shown in the trailers, one of Riddler’s victims is mayor Don Mitchell Jr., who seems to have been murdered at his house and whose body was discovered with the words “No More Lies” inscribed on his face. The ensuing burial will be depicted in The Batman, providing the Riddler with yet another chance to wreak havoc on the residents of Gotham.

Before Bruce Wayne encounters the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon talks with a fellow cop about missing D.A. Gil Colson. Then, a vehicle smashes into the church, carrying Colson himself as well as a message for Batman. Historically, the Riddler’s penchant for puzzles leads to the greatest enigma of all: the Dark Knight’s true identity. The above footage, like many of The Batman’s earlier teases, indicates that Dano’s Riddler already knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, or discovers it early in the film. There have also been rumors that the film would investigate the Wayne family’s participation in Gotham’s corruption, which the Riddler wishes to expose root and branch. If Pattinson’s Batman wants to vanquish the Riddler, he must reconcile his family’s history.

The villain’s fondness for riddles will undoubtedly test Bruce’s abilities as a crime fighter and investigator, leading him to some unsettling conclusions in The Batman. That, along with its amazing cinematography, vicious action, pulse-pounding music, and outstanding cast, is what makes Batman one of the year’s most anticipated films.
