As it turns out, 24 hours isn’t a lot of time. Especially if you’re a trained assassin with one more trigger to pull before succumbing to a fatal dosage of poison. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s time is running out, and as the debut teaser for Netflix’s Kate demonstrates, she’s making the most of it. This appears to be a spectacular romp, complete with a trail of bleeding bodies and bullets flying by at breakneck speed. The eponymous assassin has been poisoned and has only one day to take down the Yakuza’s “top honcho.” As time runs out in a metropolis packed with brilliant lights and even brighter laser sights, she is expertly guided by her tutor (Woody Harrelson). Kate has one more task to accomplish before it’s too late.

As far as plots go, it’s instantly engrossing-assisted by Winstead’s uncanny ability to go from badass to adorable in an instant. Of course, John Wick parallels will abound (as they did with Netflix’s own recent Gunpowder Milkshake). However, this isn’t necessarily a terrible thing. The approach works – just look at Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody – and Winstead is definitely putting her own spin on things. If you don’t trust me, watch the last ‘outnumbered’ sequence in the Kate trailer. That’s for sure, Winstead has action skills. Kate, featuring Miku Martineau, will be released on September 10. It kicks off the streamer’s excellent end-of-year slate, which includes Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice in November, as well as the sci-fi thriller Escape from Spiderhead, starring Chris Hemsworth, by the end of the year.
