Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick was arguably the most anticipated movie of 2022. Sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, fans awaited the action thriller with bated breath. A movie released 36 years after its predecessor hit, Top Gun: Maverick seems to have inspired other long-awaited sequels. 2002’s Legally Blonde: Red, White, and Blonde being a flagbearer of the same.
Directed by Robert Luketic, 2001’s Legally Blonde gained cult status among fans. Elle Woods (the protagonist) becoming a pop culture icon, led to the release of the 2nd installment of the franchise in 2002. Titled ‘Legally Blonde: Red, White, and Blonde’, the teen rom-com did not live up to the greatness of the first movie. However, the cast and fans have been hopeful of a 3rd installment in the franchise. As a result, hope has reignited with the release and success of the new Top Gun sequel.
Inspired by Top Gun, is Legally Blonde 3 in the making?
Reese Witherspoon, the actress who played the lead in the Legally Blonde franchise of movies, has recently revealed being inspired by Top Gun: Maverick for her reprisal as Elle Woods. Hinting at the long gap between both Top Gun movies, Reese believes a new Legally Blonde movie could follow the trend.

Reese in an interview on Friday said,
“I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way. It’s just like Top Gun: They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people [back] then.” Witherspoon continued, “I feel like these characters are my friends, so I safeguard them. I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”
When will the movie be released?
The actress (Reese Witherspoon) confirmed in 2018 that she was in talks to reprise her role for the third installment in the franchise. Later in 2020, MGM posted a message to its official Twitter account announcing a May 2022 release date for the film. Regardless, the movie since then has not received an official release date.
With Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick hitting the screens 36 years after its prequel, Legally Blonde and Elle Woods see a ray of hope all over again. Only time will tell whether the hopes of fans and Reese’s would amount to the release of Legally Blonde 3.
Legally Blonde 1 & 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
