The Quick and the Dead star Sharon Stone hired Leonardo DiCaprio because the studio didn’t want to.

The sheer dedication and craftsmanship of Leonardo DiCaprio’s work impressed Sharon Stone. The celebrated actress recounts in her memoir The Beauty of Living Twice, who was also a co-producer for the film The Quick and the Dead of this incident. The casting for the role named “The Kid” was getting difficult as the days passed and no teen seemed to capture its essence until Leonardo DiCaprio walked into the audition.

“This kid named Leonardo DiCaprio was the only one who nailed the audition, in my opinion: he was the only one who came in and cried, begging his father to love him as he died in the scene,”  Stone wrote in her memoir.

The studio did not want to take a risk with an unfamiliar face who was yet to be cast in his breakthrough role.

“‘Why an unknown, Sharon, why are you always shooting yourself in the foot?'” The studio asked her clearly stating its disinterest.

“The studio said if I wanted him so much, I could pay him out of my own salary. So I did.” so she did indeed.
