No Marvel hero was able to match up with Thanos in the Infinity War. Thor lost his entire kind to him, including Loki while Rocket lost the entire Guardians team. Captain America lost Bucky, who was the first one to turn into dust post-Thanos’ snap. Iron Man had to feel Peter’s death, right in front of his eyes.

Even our mighty Hulk lost a lot in the battle, including himself. After receiving a brutal beating by the hands of Thanos, Hulk refused to come out throughout the rest of the film. However, Mark Ruffalo who plays the character onscreen revealed that it wasn’t Thanos who scared Hulk. The Hulk is scared of something else, which will be finally revealed in Avengers 4 next year. But one thing is for sure, Thanos isn’t Hulk’s Biggest fear.

Thanos is probably the only character in the MCU who has taken Hulk down convincingly with his bare hands! However, one thing is clear that Hulk is not the kind who gets scared by a beating; I mean, he thrives on anger so losing to someone should only make him angry; not scared.

In an interview with The Marvelist Podcast, Mark Ruffalo revealed that Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon helped Ruffalo realise the greatest fear of Hulk. Here’s what he said:

“There’s a conflict brewing between Banner and Hulk that’s been going on since the beginning. And it all came out of sort of this question that Joss Whedon asked me when Hulk gets the fairy dust from Scarlet Witch sprinkled on him in [Avengers: Age of Ultron], Joss asked ‘What is Hulk afraid of?’

So it’s clear that the character has been struggling with his alter ego, Bruce Banner and the Hulk is more terrified of himself than Thanos.

“And that was a hard thing for me to answer because what is the strongest, fiercest thing in the universe afraid of? And then I realized it’s Banner. The only thing Hulk is afraid of is Banner and so that’s become something that we’ve been riffing on since [Age of Ultron]. We played with it a lot in [Thor:] Ragnarok and it continues to be teased out in [Avengers:] Infinity War and [Avengers 4],”

He added.

Avengers 4 will hopefully see a reunion of the two as the leaked poster hints at the possibility of Professor Hulk in Avengers 4. Even the creators mentioned the trilogy of the Hulk story arc which began with Thor: Ragnarok and will end with Avengers 4.
