Marvel Comics “Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1”

Marvel Comics has revealed Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1, Mary Jane Watson will have to suit up and spring into action in January in order to save Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, one of her fiercest opponents.

Spider-Man has always been notorious for his tangled romantic relationships. Peter Parker began his career as a superhero when he was just 15 years old, which meant he had to constantly make excuses for why he was so unreliable since he was obliged to slip away and suit up almost every time he was out on a date. So it came as a relief to both Peter and the readers when Spider-Man fell in love with Black Cat, a lady who was more interested in him as Spider-Man than in Peter Parker.

Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1

A new one-shot from the regular Black Cat creative team of writer Jed MacKay and artist C.F. Villa, as part of its January 2022 solicits. The official synopsis for the book is as follow: “Black Cat has been kidnapped, and the only person who can save her is… Mary Jane Watson?!”. “Mary Jane has never liked Felicia Hardy, and now she has to save her life?! But remember, this is the Black Cat we’re talking about. Things are never quite what they seem.”

While the one-main shot’s cover, created by artist J. Scott Campbell, does not explicitly refer to MJ as a superhero in this instance (though she has certainly been one in other continuities), it does feature Peter Parker/Spider-one-time Man’s wife wearing a black catsuit similar to those worn by Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow or, of course, Black Cat herself.

Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1 has alternative covers by Peach Momoko, Nabetse Zitro, Humberto Ramos, Adam Hughes, Phil Jimenez, and the aforementioned C.F. Villa, in addition to Campbell’s main cover. Aside from Momoko, another of Marvel’s Stormbreakers will supply a variant cover, though it’s unclear who it will be. The comic itself is 48 pages long and costs $4.99 USD on the cover.

Mary Jane & Black Cat: Beyond #1, written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by C.F. Villa, will be released by Marvel Comics in January 2022.
