Hulk’s Transformation Got Wiped Out In Phase 4

The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe explained why Shang-Chi reversed Hulk’s transformation. As fans are currently looking forward to MCU phase 4, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is not expected to return any time soon. However, he made a guest appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings’ post-credit scenes. But, the appearance showed up as a big shock for the Hulk fans. In the movie, Hulk was shown in the human form of Bruce Banner, which is perhaps a drastic change from the one (Smart Hulk) that appeared in Avengers: Endgame.

As far as Hulk’s Marvel Cinematic Universe story is concerned, his inner conflict to control the shift between the Hulk and Bruce Banner has been a critical part of his journey. Fans have seen Hulk’s control at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok and apparently retreating his scenarios with Thanos in Infinity War. However, the situation wasn’t the same in Avengers: Endgame where the greatest transformation in his character was occured. Bruce Banner managed to merge himself and Hulk five years after Thanos’ snap. It looked like this version (Smart Hulk) will going to be the same all through the upcoming phases as well. But with the release of Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, Hulk’s transformation into Smart Hulk got wiped out.

Smart Hulk Is No Longer Required

The recently launched Marvel Studios’ book revealed that it was the makers who always wanted to keep the Hulk surrounded with the same conflict he had before. Moreover, the book also echoed what Kevin Feige has to say about the character.

We never even considered doing Planet Hulk because, as cool as we thought the comic was, Bruce Banner is not a part of Planet Hulk. And Banner has always been an important component of the Hulk storytelling the studio wants to explore.”

With that being said, Marvel and Shang-Chi both reflected how shortsighted Hulk’s transformation could be. Thus, Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought the character to such a point where Smart Hulk is no longer required.
