The moment when Captain America lifted Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Endgame gave everyone goosebumps. But it has also been a point of contention among fans. After the debate of timetraveling Captain America and why Captain America is worthy of lifting the Mjolnir abated, a new question arose- how could he channel lightning through the hammer. But Marvel fans has come up with a solution for this apparent plothole.
Lightning Can Be Channeled Through Mjolnir Only By Thor
The point here is that lifting the hammer and channeling electricity through it are two different things. Thor: Ragnarok established that Mjolnir didn’t give Thor the ability to control lightning. Thor is the god of thunder, so that power came from within. Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus said in an interview regarding this issue that:
“There was certainly a debate at one point because particularly in Ragnarok, it establishes that Thor can summon the lightning without the hammer. I think Odin even says, ‘It was never the hammer.’ And yet Cap summons the lightning with the hammer. You get to those things and you’re like, ‘It’s too awesome not to do it! We’ll talk about it later.'”
The Loophole Is Due To Odin
But fans have found a loophole in the way Odin enchanted Mjolnir. Odin worded the enchantment as:
“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
So if Thor possesses the innate ability to channel lightning, then anyone wielding Mjolnir should possess that same “power of Thor.”
This seems like a little issue to nitpick and we are gonna have to side with the writers that Cap channeling lightning was too cool to not do, logistics be damned. But it still feels like an overlooked issue especially in a cinematic universe which takes care to smooth the smallest issues over. This overlooked little detail could be the result of the tight filming schedule which didn’t leave room for any rewrites.
