2021 is here, and with that we are one step closer to begin the Phase 4 of Marvel Cinematic Universe.

WandaVision will start streaming on the Disney+ channel from 15th of January, which will be the start of MCU’s Phase 4. And then there are hosts of show in line to add to the long list of characters that will find their place in the MCU for Phase 4 – old and new.

Among them, one is none other than Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.

Since Marvel Television was taken over by Marvel studios after the whole Disney acquisition, all the Marvel shows on Netflix were cancelled – starting with Iron Fist and Luke Cage, and then subsequently Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Defenders and of course, Jon Bernthal starring The Punisher.

Bernthal first came into the role of Frank Castle in the second season of Daredevil, after which the character was given a green light to have a solo spin off, and thus came The Punisher. But after two very successful seasons, Netflix had to cancel the show, along with the rest.

But with MCU Phase 4 coming to action soon, there is a chance that the character of Punisher can return to our screens. Disney announced their plans for a new series on the character of Moon Knight – with Oscar Isaac at the frontlines to bag the chance to play it. And that is where Disney can incorporate the old with the new.

The Backstory:

We first met Frank Castle as a troubled veteran who is back home, but hell bent on trying to avenge his dead family. We see Punisher and Daredevil aka Matt Murdoch, form an alliance at the end of Daredevil Season 2 to fight against the enemies. Then The Punisher got its own spin off, and we get to have a more in depth look at this complex character.

Here Frank Castle becomes a vigilante, and has his own little mission to fulfil. But all the while, his desire to avenge the death of his family never abates. And it is one of the many things that fuels Castle to become The Punisher – someone who is not exactly a hero by the books!

And although the story was bought to a respectful end by the time second season of the show was released because of cancellation; now would be the perfect time to write the character back in to the arc. Moon Knight and Punisher teaming together is one for the books!

Similar to Franck, the story of Marc Spector or Moon Knight is also riddled with tragic deaths in the family. He too is driven by the thoughts of vengeance, which leads him to become a billionaire by day and mercenary by night. The most accurate reference to the character of Moon Knight would be to DC’s Batman.

But unlike Bruce Wayne, Marc Spector suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, or what is commonly termed as DID. And according to the statements by Marvel and Disney, the Moon Knight series will focus on these various identities living inside of Spector. And thus, Moon Knight is the moniker chosen by Spector when he becomes a vigilante.

Moon Knight and Punisher:

So it would be delight to have these two characters – Frank Castle and Marc Spectre cross paths. And it would be even more amazing to see the two vigilantes – Punisher and Moon Knight teaming up to kick some bad guy butt!

And it’s not like the characters have never crossed paths in their comic book storylines. Moon Knight and Punisher have teamed up multiple times over the course of time to have some action filled incidents. And at the same time, the characters seem to bond over their personal life, as well as the life as a vigilante.

Whether or not Disney and Marvel decide to bring back the character in their upcoming shows, we will have to wait for. There are even some rumors about Charlie Cox’s Daredevil making an appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man 3 movie. We sure hope there is some truth to these rumors.

For now, let’s wait for the shows in line to start streaming on Disney+  starting with WandaVision, and then followed by the likes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, and of course, Moon Knight.
