In a recent interview with EW, Ben Mendelsohn revealed that he would be using his natural Australian accent when in Skrull form, which most likely means that the rest of Skrull species will have an Australian accent too. This might sound odd and we’ll just have to wait till Marvel drops a trailer for Captain Marvel.

Here’s what Mendelsohn told EW:

“It was a very lengthy discussion that happened all up and down the echelons of this. I don’t want to paint my whole country like a Skrull, but I guess because there’s a certain je ne sais quoi. There’s a certain kind of earthy correctness to an Australian delivery. So I think that’s probably what tipped it in favor of me. And then my other guy sounds like Don Rumsfeld. Don Rumsfeld’s a good kind of read for my other guy.”

However, the actor also revealed that he will be speaking in an American accent while in his human disguise.

“I mean, when you’re Skrullin’, it’s a bit of a different thing. It’s a got a certain flow to it that this guy [gestures to human costume] doesn’t have. Because this guy doesn’t sound like this. This guy is [adopts American accent] a lot more like, straight up, ready to do the work, very military industrial complex certain 1990-whatever. A lot more buttoned up. Skrullin’ is a bit more laid back, a bit tougher. A little bit nastier? Maybe? Maybe. You got sharper nails, stuff like that.”

This could be a big plot reveal that Talos will be disguising himself as Nick Fury’s Superior at SHIELD. This is certainly a prime position to execute a secret invasion of Earth, something that Fury will help stop.

The actor also stated that Skrulls are often “misunderstood” and that, they were played dirty by the Kree. However, in the comics, neither side was actually “good” and from what we’ve seen in the MCU so far, the Krees are pretty huge pricks to the rest of the universe.

Moreover, the Skrull homeworld got destroyed in the comics which made them all refugees.

“Look…. [long sigh] We gotta deal with the Kree. The Kree are punks. And the Skrulls, I mean, we’re just misunderstood. At the end of the day, the Skrull is really misunderstood. Look, I don’t want to curse in print or anywhere else, but if I could, I would about the Kree. Yeah. I would.”

Mendelsohn also talked about Carol Danvers in the film, stating that she’s more of a threat to the Skrulls than the Krees but still seemed confident in taking her on.

“You’ve gotta be a bit more careful of Carol than the Kree. But I think as far as we’re concerned in the Skrull world, she’s kind of like a major obstacle. I still think we can take her. If we had to — if we had to, had to, had to — we could take Carol.”

Talking about Danvers, Mendelsohn revealed that she will take some time to recover from the encounter with Skrulls in the film, as the damage will be more psychological than physical. In the comics, we’ve seen Carol Danvers developing an expertise in killing Skrulls, so it’s likely that the Skrulls will mess up with her emotionally in the film.

“It’s very touching, actually. I mean, you want her to win. Now, unfortunately, not every fairytale turns out that well. Sometimes you meet a Skrull. But Carol’s resourceful. She’s going to have a few films to get over this and maybe come back from this. We’ll see. [Laughs]”

From what it sounds, it seems like Carol will end up in a pretty bad shape post-Captain Marvel, and this could be one of the reasons why she’s been off the planet for so long.
