With the tide of hatred turning on people of non-conventional sexual orientation, the comic books and the cinematic universes seem to be following suit. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon a couple of LGBTQ characters on screen, Marvel Studio has announced. The studio head Kevin Feige announced during an interview with The Playlist while promoting the upcoming Marvel movie Ant Man and the Wasp that the studio would strive to include the group that has found increasing representation and acceptance across the States. Again, the announcement comes during the Pride Month, meant to celebrate people of varying sexual orientations, and fans will certainly take note. Feige went on to say that one of these characters has already been introduced and is actually well established whereas the other is yet to appear on screen. Throughout the world of Marvel Comics, there are plenty of characters who have been revealed to not be straight either within the pages of the comics or by their creators. A possible candidate for the established character that the studio head referred to could be Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, who we saw in the Thor: Ragnarok movie. It was not revealed in the movie itself, although that would have been nice, but during a Twitter exchange the actress told a fan that she was indeed bisexual and it was really great to play
her because she did not really care about men.
Feige has previously forecast that an established LGBTQ character would exist in the MCU by the year 2025, whereas director James Gunn(who has made the Guardians of the Galaxy movies) has stated that an LGBTQ character might already be there in the MCU and he or she just has not come out to everyone yet. When recently asked about this, he responded by saying that the MCU movies had not really delved into the sexuality of any of their characters, central or small, and if and when they start going into that, it just might be that they might turn out to be gay. For the new character that Feige alluded to, one should look at the Phase 3 movies that are supposed to come out soon. Ant Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Avengers 4(yet uannamed) are the ones where debuts can potentially happen. For Phase 4, the only movies that we know of yet that are confirmed are the Spiderman: Homecoming sequel and the Guardians of Galaxy: Vol 3. The title to the upcoming Spiderman movie was revealed by Tom Holland as Spiderman: Far From Home, which Feige promptly confirmed. There is a potential Eternals movie that is rumoured to be in the works, a sequel to Black Panther and a Black Widow movie that might possibly happen. The LGBTQ character could be introduced in any of these movies, so we will have to wait and watch. In any case, it is great to see that the Marvel Studios are being progressive about diversifying the portrayal of characters away from the usual standard and towards a richer picture.
Happy Pride Month!
