Michael B. Jordan is a known face in the superhero world. Having had a couple of appearances in the Marvel Universe, the news of him appearing as the new Superman shouldn’t surprise anyone. Jordan has previously appeared in the Fantastic Four reboot as Johnny Storm and later as a villain, Killmonger in 2017’s Black Panther. There were some recent rumours about him getting his own series on Disney+, but this latest news throws that out of the park. If we believe the news, Michael B. Jordan is the main candidate to play Superman in the DC universe.

As the latest report suggests, Michael B. Jordan is the latest actor to be pursued by Warner Bros. to play the iconic superhero in its newly announced reboot. This news comes in right after the announcement that producer JJ Abrams might be producing the upcoming Superman film. While the studio hasn’t locked Jordan for the role yet, he seems to be their prime choice for it.

What makes this all the way more interesting is the fact that Michael B. Jordan has in fact pursued Warner Bros. to play the role in the past. This wasn’t long ago and now it sounds like the studio is seriously considering to introduce the first black Superman to the world. With African-American writer Ta-Nehisi Coates confirmed to pen the script for the newly announced reboot, Jordan stands as a strong candidate to play Man of Steel than ever. This might also be another strong reason for fans to speculate his involvement in the project as the last son of Krypton.

The news of casting a Black Superman has been doing the rounds for quite some time in the news. If not Michael B. Jordan, the studio still seems bent on casting someone in colour for the role. This means a certain change for the character of Superman and with Coates writing the script, one can almost expect to see this change in the subtext of the script in the days to follow. Having a black actor playing the role of Superman would allow more space for social commentary on the character and will also facilitate never-seen-like-before changes to its arc. However, as long as the core values of Superman remain intact, the essence of the character would remain as the symbol of hope.

Hopefully, Warner Bros are quick to get Michael B. Jordan to sign the role and we see a new Superman. While we do not have any doubts about Jordan’s acting abilities, his addition will add a lot of charisma and strength to the character of Superman. For many fans, it will be extremely exciting to see an actor of colour playing the role of Superman – something that is yet to happen in the past 80 years of the character’s existence.

Superman was last seen on a solo outing in 2013’s Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder.
