Betrayal is quite a common plot used in films, for a really long time. While being relatable and a driving force, it’s also emotionally moving, serving as a way to up the stakes of the story. Now, whether the betrayal is at lower stakes or it is one of the heroes renouncing the side of good, it does appear in many films.

The feeling of betrayal is way more cutting when it’s arising from the character’s best friend or someone they are close to in the course of the movie. Playing on the sympathies of the fans for the loss of a friend might create some bitter interpersonal relationships in fiction, similar to what can be found in many feature films.
