On Monday, Netflix released the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the director’s first animated film. Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor), the cricket that lived in Pinocchio’s wooden heart, introduces the enchanting narrative in the video. Del Toro is collaborating with the Jim Henson Company and Shadow-Machine on this stop-motion animated adaption of Carlo Collodi’s classic about the transformation of a puppet boy into a real boy. Along with McGregor as Cricket, the voice cast includes David Bradley as Geppetto, Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman, as well as Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.

What did Del Toro have to say about the project when Netflix announced it way back in 2018?

“No art form has had a greater effect on my life and work than animation, and no one figure in history has had as deep a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,” del Toro said when Netflix announced the film in 2018. “In our scenario, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an unsympathetic father who becomes trapped in a world he doesn’t understand.” He sets off on an astonishing voyage that will leave him with a profound knowledge of his father and the actual world. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to make this film. After the fantastic experience we had on Trollhunters, I am delighted that the creative team at Netflix is providing me with the once-in-a-lifetime chance to expose fans all around the world to my interpretation of this odd puppet-turned-real-boy.”

Following Del Toro’s statement, Netflix’s Vice President of Kids & Family, added:

Melissa Cobb, Netflix’s Vice President of Kids and Family, added at the time, “Guillermo has demonstrated mastery in inspiring people through his magical worlds filled with unforgettable and magnificent characters, from the monsters in Pan’s Labyrinth to the aquatic creature in The Shape of Water, throughout his distinguished career.” We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Guillermo, and we are confident that his heartfelt vision for bringing Pinocchio to life on Netflix will be loved by fans all across the world. ” Pinnochio builds on Del Toro’s previous collaboration with Netflix. He previously co-created Trollhunters, the first episode of the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Cabinet of Curiosities, Del Toro’s horror anthology, will premiere on Netflix later this year. What do you guys think of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio’s first look? Tell us in the comments. Pinnochio will be available on Netflix in the fall.
