A new controversial take on Sky Lukewalker’s death in Star Wars: Return of Jedi has been shared by actor Mark Hamill.

Return of Jedi is probably the most divisive film in the franchise. By the end of the film, Luke was shaking from his depression and he embraced his legacy, using his power to trick First Order forces of Kyro Ren for a long time to help the remaining of the Resistance get aboard the Millennium Falcon. However, Skywalker’s presence is revealed as just a Force Projection, from Ahch-To. This leads to a lot of exertion for him, ultimately disappearing and becoming one with the Force.

While many fans loved the sendoff for the character, there many who were angry with Luke’s demise. Now, Hamill has shared a new interpretation of the ending of the character which makes all of it even sadder. “You have to acknowledge the irony in his fate,” he wrote. “Almost like an addict that kicked his habit cold-turkey, remained clean for decades, only to re-use just once & then, tragically, overdoses.”
