NYPD to Patrol the Theatres as Joker Hits the Theatre This Weekend

Moviegoers in New York City will come across a robust police presence as they gear up for the opening weekend of the movie Joker. The Police Officers will be patrolling at the front entrance of the theatre. Though the police have not received any specific threats, the public should be aware of it. We are at a stage where mass shootings have become common and there are ongoing concerns about such violence. The link between media and actions depicting violence is missing, yet people want to play the blame game by pointing fingers at such movies for promoting violence in reality.

Blast From the Past

The NYPD is taking certain precautions as they do not want a repetition of the past incident. Seven years ago, there was shooting at the premier of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado. Some family members of the victims of the 2012 Aurora shooting sent a notice to Warner Bros. They were expressing their concerns with the movie and its impact on the audience. The Century Aurora and XD that have been remodeled since the 2012 shooting will not be showing Joker at all. Theaters have been landmarked across 27 markets in the U.S. which will ban the Joker costumes, Joker face painting or cosplay of any sort. The rumor began in the hours after James Holmes shot down 12 people and injured 70 at the 2012 screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Speaking at a press conference in Manhattan, then-New York police commissioner, Ray Kelly said that Holmes had referred to himself as the Joker. “He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘the Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” Kelly said.
