Obi-Wan Kenobi dethrones The Mandalorian
In 2019, Disney+ launched and The Mandalorian’s first episode became a huge success for the platform. The return of The Mandalorian season 2 in 2020 made the mark of the Star Wars franchise on the small screen. The recent Obi-Wan Kenobi became the third live-action Star Wars TV show to premiere on Disney+ with special two-episodes.
How did Obi-Wan become the most-watched Disney+ series?
Thank you to the best fans in the galaxy for making #ObiWanKenobi the most-watched @DisneyPlus Original series premiere globally to date, based on hours streamed in an opening weekend. pic.twitter.com/enb72jo4kh— Obi-Wan Kenobi (@obiwankenobi) May 31, 2022
Obi-Wan Kenobi followed the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and fans were awaiting the return of Ewan McGregor. The series was highly anticipated as fans were desperate for a reunion of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. The premier of Obi-Wan Kenobi coincided with Star Wars Celebration 2022 and followed the Jedi Master returning to action after Leia Organa was kidnapped. The event brought Obi-Wan into conflict with Reva played by Ingram Moses, who received backlash and racial comments on her Instagram account.
Obi-Wan viewership records
No official record or figures have been released for the Obi-Wan Kenobi’s viewership by Disney. However, the announcement shows that Obi-Wan Kenobi is the most-watched premiere globally for a Disney+ original show based on hours streamed in an opening weekend. Earlier, Marvel’s Loki held the record for being the biggest Disney+ premier but now Obi-Wan Kenobi has beaten every record and becomes the most-watched Disney Plus Original series premiere globally to date, based on hours streamed in an opening weekend.
Will it beat all the previous records?
Hype for an Obi-Wan Keno and Darth Vader reunion boosted the viewership record for the series as the series had built-in fans who were eager to see them again. So far Disney plus has a subscriber base of 138 million and Obi-Wan Kenobi seemed to seize them all. Since Obi-Wan Kenobi has beaten The Mandalorian’s opening weekend record, it will be fascinating to see whether it will be able to beat the other MCU series.
