As superhero fans around the globe begin following John Cena and DC’s Peacemaker series on the HBO Max network, creator and director James Gunn has some really promising news: Well, a major character from the series will return in a DC film in the coming future.

In an exclusive interview with TV’s Top 5 podcast, Gunn revealed that the Peacemaker takes place in the same universe as The Suicide Squad, which came in the year 2021.

“It [Peacemaker] is part of the DCU, I mean they can use these characters,” Gunn said. “I mean one of these characters, which people have kind of figured out, one of these characters is used in a future big DC movie that’s from here. So we are connected to all of this.”

If we keep away Cena/Peacemaker, it’s quite possible that James Gunn could be referencing Peacemaker’s best friend here – the utter sociopath Vigilante, who is played by Freddie Stroma.

James Gunn also talked about how it’s quite unclear at the moment which characters or actors will be eventually taking off in the DC extended universe, even citing his work on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. Those films had featured relatively unknown characters in the Marvel comics universe lore, but a really popular reception helped them launch some key roles in Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

James Gunn’s comments could also mean that NSA agent Emilia Harcourt (played by Jennifer Holland) might return in DC’s Black Adam, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. With only the first three episodes of The Peacemaker available at the moment, only time will tell.

Movie critics have termed Peacemaker as “a goofy takedown of vigilantism while hinting at bigger and darker plots to come.” You should definitely check out the goofy dance that was choreographed for the opening credits sequence, which features Wig Wam’s “Do You Wanna Taste It?”

Peacemaker is streaming on HBO Max now.
