Popular Superhero Films That Never Got A Sequel

It has been a long time since superheroes have been showing up on our silver screens. The Adventures of Captain Marvel by Fawcett Comics was the first live-action serial aired in 1941. However, Fleischer Studios premiered the animated Superman shorts a few months later. This became highly successful among the viewers.

As of now, superheroes have completely taken over the movie screens. With franchises like Shazam and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel and DC have both given blockbusters to the fans. However, not all movies get their sequels and some simply fall after their first film. Here are some superhero films that never got a sequel.

Green Hornet

The Green Hornet

Directed by Michael Gondry, this movie stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, and Cameron Diaz. The movie sees Rogen playing the titular role while Chou plays his sidekick Tato.

The film was a financial success but got axed by the critics.

Superwoman

Helen Slater as Superwoman

After Superman III, producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind decided to give a break to Superman and decided to make a movie about his cousin, Superwoman.

Starring Helen Slater in the lead role, the movie was a disaster in the box office with a confusing plot and extremely poor visual effects. This movie was the reason why makers kept away from making female-led superhero films for long.

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

The second film in the MCU, The Incredible Hulk is the only MCU film without a sequel. Starring Edward Norton, Tim Roth, and Liv Taylor, the film was financially successful but wasn’t loved much by the audiences.

However, the actual reason why Marvel couldn’t make a sequel was that the movie rights to a sequel lay with Universal Pictures.

The Rocketeer

The Rocketeer (1991)

The film was released in 1991 by Disney and was directed by Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston.

While the film was not a success, it is filled with action, charm, and fun. The movie shows Rocketeer, played by Bill Campbell who uses a jetpack he discovers to fight Nazis and eventually save his girlfriend.

Superman Returns

Brandon Routh as Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns

After the success of the first two X-Men films, Warner Bros got Bryan Singer to bring Superman back on the screen. The film wasn’t a reboot, but a sequel to the Superman films of the 1970’s.

With a poor storyline and average performances, the film was a disaster at the box office which squashed all its plans for a sequel.

Sky High

Sky High (2005)

Disney’s Sky High was released in 2005 which depicted the lives of powered teens attending a school for superheroes. It stars Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston in the lead roles.

Unfortunately, the film was a disaster at the box office and all plans for a sequel got canceled. While the film has gained a cult fanbase in the years that followed, the chances of a Sky High sequel remain dim.

Chronicle

Chronicle (2012)

The film shows the story of three teenage boys who gain telekinetic powers after finding a crystalline object in a tunnel. Directed by Josh Trank, the film stars Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell. It released in 2012.

It shows the trio filming their newly found superpowers while learning to use them until one of them goes evil. The film was a debut of Trank and the three stars. The film was successful at the box office but never saw a sequel.

Punisher War Zone

Ray Stevenson as Punisher

We have had three Punisher films to date and none managed to find lure the audience. The last Punisher film was Punisher: War Zone starring Ray Stevenson as the lead.

Due to extreme violence, the movie got an R-rating and was received poorly by the 2008 audience which wasn’t ready for so much violence. The movie may have gained a cult following ever since but it seems unlikely that Marvel will ever make another Punisher movie.
