Meghan Markle was an American actress before she knew British royal family member, Prince Harry. Though things were initially hard for her, it became much worse when she started her relationship with the latter in 2016. The central pressure she received came from the negative articles about her that appeared in the British press which even provoked her to have suicidal thoughts.

In volume 2 of the Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry opens up about being devastated for not being able to help his wife, Meghan Markle when she was having suicidal thoughts. In the 2021 bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex made headlines when she spoke about feeling the pressure during her time in the royal family.

In the docuseries, Prince Harry stated,

“I was devastated. I knew she was struggling. We were both struggling, but I never thought it would get to that stage and the fact that it got to that stage, I felt angry and ashamed.”

He also mentioned that he did not deal with that issue as a husband but he handled it the way he was trained as a royal, which is why he felt angry.

“I dealt with it as ‘Institutional Harry’ as opposed to ‘Husband Harry.’ And what took over my feelings was my royal role. I had been trained to worry more about, ‘What are people going to think if we don’t go to this event? We’re going to be late.’”

He hated himself for the way he handled the situation which is why he regretted that phase. Stating, “I hate myself for it,” he added that his wife was in more need of his support than he was actually able to offer at the time.

The 41-year-old royal member explained in the docuseries that the phase was the “scariest thing” for her. She started experiencing suicidal thoughts after the couple’s 2018 wedding when the British press kept on writing negatively about her.

“It was like, all of this will stop if I’m not here,” she shared in the docuseries adding, “and that was the scariest thing about it because it was such clear thinking.”

Her husband also opened up about the response the couple received from the royal family.

“They thought, ‘Why couldn’t she just deal with it?’ As if to say, ‘Well everyone else has dealt with it, why can’t she deal with it?’ But it was different. This was different.

She also explained the reason behind revealing her suicidal thoughts in the bombshell last year’s interview recently by stating that she wanted everyone to have the courage to speak about their experience and understand that they are not the only ones having such feelings.
