2019’s Avengers: Endgame saw the end of the arc for Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark in the Marvel Universe. Since 2008, the actor has headlined and molded one of the biggest movie franchises that you may come along with. Fans will forever remember his portrayal of Iron Man in the years to come. The franchise has already succeeded in making billions of dollars and one can give a lot of credit to Robert Downey Jr for his involvement in it. However, the latest reports suggest that the actor has moved on from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is in news to join another big franchise. Yes, you heard it right. Robert Downey Jr. is in news to join the Tron franchise when it reboots.
Robert Downey Jr To Star In Tron Sequel?
The rumor also suggests that the actor is already in talks to join the forthcoming Tron: Ares film in the franchise. The film is still in its beginning stages with Suicide Squad star Jared Leto as the only confirmed actor in the movie. If Downey is looking forward to separating himself from the iconic persona of Tony Stark aka Iron Man, a role in the big-budget Tron can certainly be a huge opening.
The reports also suggest that it will be a high-budget film, with more than $170 million being speculated as to the production cost right now. This would go on to make this one of the most expensive movies to have been made ever. It would not only speak to the visual effects budget but may also see the signing of some big names in the industry. Robert Downey is currently one of the highest-paid actors in the world and this role might just be the right choice for him for now. Moreover, if the makers are looking to turn Tron into a major franchise then the film needs to bring on some big names from the industry.
Robert Downey Jr Needs To Move On From Endgame As An Actor
Tron: Ares will be seen following the original Tron which released way back in 1982 gaining a cult status ever since. Since then, we have seen a sequence in Tron: Legacy which released almost 30 years later and ended as a solid hit at the box office with a gross of more than $400 million against a budget of $170 million. However, this was over a decade back and the franchise has been in a sort of limbo ever since. Moreover, actors like Jared Leto and Robert Downey Jr. will attract more attention from fans which would help to set a stage for future films.
After Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr was last seen in last year’s Dolittle which barely made over $251 million on its $175 million budget at the box office. The film also turned out to be a flop among critics, sitting at merely 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. Apart from this, Downey also has a Sherlock Holmes film under pre-production which would be marked as the third film in the franchise. However, it will be really interesting to see Robert Downey Jr in the Tron franchise.
