The Orville Season 3 has been renewed.

Fox has formally revived Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville for season 3. The sci-fi show is MacFarlane’s love letter to Star Trek with a bend that is comedic. The show has been set 400 years in the future, and also follows the adventures of the USS Orville. The boat is a spaceship with a team of aliens and people. They confront risks and the wonders seen in space.

The Orville has become regarded as a competition for the Emmy Awards. MacFarlane told Deadline the initial plan for the series was more of a comedy, but that might have been a subconscious cover narrative to produce the series he wished to make.

“When we started it was developed to be a tiny bit more of a hybrid vehicle, straddling the line fairly evenly between humour and drama,” MacFarlane said. “I’ve been a massive sci-fi enthusiast since I was a child. I believe secretly that has been the series I wanted to perform, but I figured there is no way in hell anybody would consume that from me.”

MacFarlane believes going together with the darker tone for The Orville has been the ideal choice. “Having an hourlong series, to maintain it, you must have real bets,” he explained. “This was my panic in the start. We are most likely not going to survive long if folks are not with us on the side of this. Nevertheless, they were. Therefore we leaned towards that.”

The Orville built up its mythology at its next season, introducing fresh enemies at the Kaylon which pushed an alliance between the Union and former foes of the Krill.
