Despite being considered for the role of Captain America, Sebastian Stan has expressed his gratitude for being cast as the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Stan’s remarks are taken from Abrams Books’ The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which also looks into Chris Evans’ casting as Steve Rogers in the MCU.

“Chris was perfect — a great actor who was the embodiment of Steve Rogers,” said Stephen Broussard, Marvel Studios’ VP of Production and Development. “Even without any costuming, he had the right look. The only thing going against him was these other [Fantastic Four] films that didn’t live up to expectations.”

Sebastian Stan Had Screen-Tested For The Role Of Steve Rogers

Despite this, Broussard and Marvel Studios President/Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige met with Evans to propose him the story for Captain America: The First Avenger. Broussard and Feige went to an early private showing of The Apparition to see Stan’s performance in the horror picture while Evans considered their offer. Despite the fact that Stan had already screen-tested for the character of Steve Rogers for casting directors Sarah Finn and Randi Hiller, his performance in the film persuaded Feige to meet with him about playing Bucky Barnes instead.

Stan explained that Feige took him through Bucky’s history in Marvel comic books, especially Ed Brubaker’s Winter Soldier saga (none of which Stan was familiar with).

“I definitely want to be clear about this: I am extremely grateful I got this role and not the Captain America role. I looked at it like it was meant to be.”

Stan first appeared as Bucky in The First Avenger before morphing into the Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was released in 2014. Since then, the actor has reprised his role in other MCU films, as well as acting with Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson in Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. Stan said shortly after the programme ended earlier this year that he had “no idea” whether or not he will reprise his role as Bucky.

Disney+ is showing The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the upcoming Captain America 4, Mackie will resume his role as Sam/Captain America, albeit no news on whether Stan will reprise his role as Bucky.
