Shakira finds herself in a sea of woes and the problems just keep piling up. Her split from her partner of 12 years, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, after it was revealed that he was having an affair with a younger woman has been the cause for enough distress already. The couple shares two kids and the biggest issue in the aftermath of their split has been the custody of their children, for which the two are fighting a rigorous court battle. On top of that, Shakira has to now face another trial for tax fraud against the Spanish authorities.
Shakira charged with tax evasion
Back in 2018, Shakira was charged by Spanish prosecutors for failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014. If the singer is found guilty of tax evasion, she will face a possible fine and prison sentence.
The Hips don’t lie singer was offered a deal by Spanish prosecutors to settle the allegations of defrauding Spain’s government of 14.5 million euros in taxes. However, Shakira opted for a trial instead of the out-of-court settlement. Her PR firm Llorente y Cuenca issued a statement on Wednesday, July 17, saying that Shakira “trusts her innocence and chooses to leave the issue in the hands of the law.”
The exact details of the deal offered by the prosecutors haven’t been made public yet.
According to Shakira’s public relations firm, the singer does not have any pending tax debts and has deposited the amount she owed with the Spanish Tax Agency. The focal point of the case is Shakira’s residence during 2012-2014. The prosecutors have alleged that Shakira was living in Spain whereas her official residence through the aforementioned years was in the Bahamas.
No end in sight to troubles
While a date for the tax fraud trial is yet to be set, Shakira is fighting tooth and nail for the right to take her children and move to Miami while Pique wants his kids to stay in Barcelona and finish their education. She has alleged that life in Barcelona has become unbearable for her and her kids who keep getting hounded by paparazzi and stalkers. Miami would be the place where they can lead a calm and peaceful life. However, chances of a happy ending look thin for the singer as she finds herself cornered by not one, but two cases at once.
