Meghan Markle and the royal family’s experiences are a quintessential family drama, through and through. And the drama started right from her induction into the royal family. After dating for two years, the Suits star married Prince Harry in 2018 in an event that was bound to turn the heads of a lot of people. It was not going to be an easy task by any means. Queen Elizabeth knew that well. And that is why she was as accommodating as possible at first.

The late British monarch had a lot of experience under her wings. She had been in power for close to 7 decades when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding became official. She had an idea about what royal life had in store for the new entrant.

She was circumspect, and was concerned for her granddaughter-in-law’s “future happiness”. In an attempt to make the When Sparks Fly actress feel welcome, Queen Elizabeth II even tried to introduce and bring her close to Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Forfar.

The new Duchess of Sussex might have been shifting to a whole new environment. But she wasn’t one who was looking to give in to the pressure. In a newly released book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, the Duchess of Sussex’s attitude of taking things head-on with confidence is explicitly mentioned.

The author, Gyles Brandreth, made the admission that Markle felt she was “more than capable” of doing everything “on her own” within the firm. The book also has an excerpt on how the first meeting between Markle and the late Queen went down.

In the very first meeting the two of them had, Queen Elizabeth intimated to Markle that she was more than free to carry on with her profession. But Markle had an active role in the Firm initially and “promised that when it came to the Commonwealth, she wouldn’t let Her Majesty down.

Brandreth wrote in the book, “‘It is very jolty, but you soon get used to it’ – that was Her Majesty’s experience going back many years.” But the Remember Me actress was not one to accept any help. The Queen understood the delicate nature they were in. But she still expected things to get better with time. Unfortunately, that was not meant to be.
