Kristen Bell hates the word “taboo”

Kristen Bell believes no topic should fall under the word taboo and people should be able to discuss anything. That’s why she never avoids talking about the “hard topics” with her children who are both under the age of 10 years. She said to Real Simple,

“I hate the word ‘taboo.’ I think it should be stricken from the dictionary. There should be no topic that’s off the table for people to talk about,”

She believes the right way to deal with these subjects is with vulnerability and compassion. Bell said,

“I know it’s shocking, but I talk to my kids about drugs, and the fact that their daddy is an addict and he’s in recovery, and we talk about sex,–There are all these ‘hard topics’ that don’t have to be if you give the person on the other end your vulnerability and a little bit of credit.”

In a podcast episode of Armchair Expert, Dax Shepard her husband praised her for explaining s*x and consent to her kids in a simple manner. He said,

“When she describes s*x to our children, she says, ‘And then the woman takes the man’s p*nis and puts it in her v*gina,’ –So right away it’s like, you’re in charge of this, you will decide to put this in your v*gina, not ‘the man’ That was like, a little subtle thing like that is like, you’re in the driver’s seat.”

Although a small adjustment, it is believed to go a long way for both of them.

Besides dealing with such tough topics she also tries to instill values in her kids that will help them be good human beings. She believes it is important for people to know how to admit their mistakes as well as forgive someone. She said,

“Making amends and apologizing is an important thing in our family, because humans leave carnage wherever they go. I really respect when someone does something wrong or hurtful and they apologize. I’m like, “Yeah, right on.” That’s important. If there’s one thing I want to teach my kids, it’s how to make amends—and that it’s for themselves, so they can like who’s in the mirror a little bit more.”

Kristen Bell feels it is important for kids to be comfortable enough around their parents to talk about such stuff which in turn cancels the need to seek information from often not-so-reliable sources that can be harmful to them. And for this, Kristen Bell might just be the coolest mom on the block.
