WARNING: Spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The latest Spider-Man movie is set shortly after the events of the Avengers: Endgame, and it essentially served as something of an extended epilogue. A lot happened over the course of Avengers: Endgame, which meant Spider-Man: Far From Home really needed to ground these cosmic events and make it clear how they’d affected everyday people.

This was done in a pretty smart way, with an opening sequence that revisited the Midtown School of Science and Technology News videos that were seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The clip served as a useful info dump to ensure viewers understand how Spider-Man: Far From Home fits into the MCU, with reference to the snap (officially called “the blip”) and the fact everybody had blipped back into existence eight months ago. The video included an “In Memoriam,” an in-universe tribute to the heroes who had died stopping Thanos. Attentive viewers will have noticed, though, that three Avengers were named – not just two.

According to the video, Thanos’ defeat cost the lives of Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America. At first glance this last reference seems pretty confusing. After all, Captain America’s story ended in a beautiful and poignant way, with the man out of time returning to the past in order to be with the love of his life. It’s unclear whether he’s been living in the shadows of the MCU all along, or whether he kicked off an alternate timeline with his presence; Avengers: Endgame‘s writers and directors disagree on this point. Whatever the case may be, though, Steve Rogers is certainly not dead.

But it would make sense for the world to think he is, perhaps believing he sustained injuries during the battle with Thanos that ultimately claimed his life. Steve Rogers became a very private person – the elderly Steve wouldn’t even tell Falcon about his life with Peggy – and his friends would respect his privacy. All the world needed to know is that the original Captain America isn’t around any more, but that he’s passed the shield on to Falcon.

Steve Rogers is certainly not dead!

Of course, the interesting question is whether or not the world really knows how it was saved at all. It’s quite likely that the events of Avengers: Endgame aren’t public knowledge; after all, they involve everything from Infinity Stones to time travel. One of the official tie-in novels, Brandon T. Snider’s The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath, revealed that the Avengers and the world’s government kept the existence of the Infinity Stones secret. The same may well be true of time travel as well; that would add another reason to the Avengers needing a cover story to explain why Captain America had disappeared, handing over his shield to Falcon.

It makes sense, then, for the students at Midtown School of Science and Technology to believe that Captain America is dead. Peter Parker is the only one at the school who may know otherwise, although it’s unclear how much even Spider-Man was told of what the Avengers did to end the blip.
