The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, is the most notable departure from prior film adaptations of the Dark Knight. Matt Reeves, the director, Movie is set during the tumultuous second year of Batman’s attempts to eliminate Gotham of its criminal element, but the Dark Knight is upset that his efforts at crimefighting aren’t having the desired effect in this reinterpretation. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne appears to be a mask that Batman wears throughout the day, fueling the widespread belief that one of the two Wayne/Batman personas is the ‘real’ one.

The Real And The Disguise

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and Batman

Thanks to creators like Frank Miller,  comics got darker and grittier, and the idea that Batman was the ‘real’ person and Bruce Wayne was the disguise began to take hold. The concept that Bruce ‘died’ the same night his parents were slain and Dark Knight became who he is today influenced how the Caped Crusader was depicted in comic books and other media after that. Tim Burton’s films alluded to Bruce Wayne as a daylight performance that Batman (Michael Keaton) does.

Keaton’s Bruce was a reclusive billionaire who avoided public appearances, but in Joel Schumacher’s sequels, Val Kilmer and George Clooney’s Waynes reversed this. To avoid suspicions that he could be the Caped Crusader, Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne played up his character as a rich playboy in The Dark Knight Trilogy. In Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne was a mix of the previous film adaptations.

Is Batman The One In Control?

Robert Pattinson

The teaser depicts a bleak and violent Gotham, centred on a troubled and obsessed Bruce Wayne. According to statements made by Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves at DC FanDome, as well as what’s visible in the trailer, Pattinson’s Dark Knight is the most committed to the idea that Wayne is a non-entity and that Batman is the genuine guy who hides behind his millionaire alter identity.

Whether or not Bruce is dressed in the Batsuit, the caped crusader appears to be in command, and Wayne is merely a mask he is obliged to wear in public. Bruce appears to be a pale shell of a person who goes through the motions in his occasional appearances in daylight. But, even if he isn’t wearing the cape and cowl, while Wayne is wearing goggles and doing detective work, he is Batman all the time.

Is He Marching Towards His Doom?

The Batman
Alfred’s warning from The Dark Knight Rises continues

Continuing on, Alfred Pennyworth’s statement to Bruce Wayne in The Batman,If this continues, it won’t be long before you’ve nothing left,” suggests that Pattinson’s Batman may be marching headlong into his own doom as he battles the Riddler, the Penguin, and a clown gang that may be linked to the Joker. In the movie, Bruce Wayne also says foreboding things such as, “I don’t care what happens to me,” alluding to his self-destructive path, as Wayne doesn’t even try to impersonate a millionaire playboy as Christian Bale did. Batman as played by Robert Pattinson appears to be considerably more isolated and tortured than previous iterations of the character.

The Batman is promised to be a distressing deep dive into the twisted psyche of the Dark Knight. The Batman appears to go well beyond Michael Keaton’s isolated hermit, Christian Bale’s obsessed loner, and Ben Affleck’s violent elder vigilante to present the harshest version yet of Batman and his alter identity, Bruce Wayne.
