Netflix has finally released the initial trailer for its forthcoming action-thriller movie called The Gray Man, starring MCU star Chris Evans and La-La Land star Ryan Gosling.

Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, The Gray Man’s movie adaptation stars Ryan Gosling working as the most skilled operative at the CIA as Court Gentry, but is forced to chase after dark secrets of the agency. He also became a target and gets hunted all around the globe by his former CIA partner Lloyd Hansen, played by Chris Evans, and many more international assassins.

The Gray Man Was Originally Being Made In 2011

The Gray Man was originally underway at New Regency back in 2011, with Brad Pitt and James Grey on the director’s chair while also playing the lead actor, respectively. However, both Pitt and Gray were not attached to the movie when actress Charlize Theron, who most recently appeared in Doctor Strange 2 as Clea, entered into conversations about a genderswapped version of the same story at Sony Pictures back in 2015.

The Movie Will Be Helmed By The Russo Brothers

There were no developments that were announced until mid-2020 when Netflix went on to reveal that they were looking forward to working on an adaptation of The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo were announced to helm the film, with a screenplay by Joe Russo himself, alongside Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. With a massive production budget of over $200 million, this is going to be the most expensive film Netflix has ever produced.

Joe Russo had earlier stated that The Gray Man is just the first installment in a much bigger franchise. “The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe,” he said when he had first taken on the project.

A Sequel and Prequel for The Gray Man Have Already Been Announced

The prequel will be penned down by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese with more focus on Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans). The sequel will be written by McFeely and Markus and shall follow Gosling’s Court Gentry on another new mission.

Apart from Evans and Gosling, the film stars Ana de Armas playing Dani Miranda, Billy Bob Thornton as Donald Fitzroyl Regé-Jean Page as Denny Carmichael, and Alfre Woodard as Maurice Cahill with Wagner Moura, Jessica Henwick, and Dhanush cast in unknown roles.

The Gray Man is all-set for a limited release in selected theaters on July 15, before it premieres on Netflix on July 22.
