James Gunn is looking to relaunch The Suicide Squad that will take the best parts of the original and throw-in some new characters and elements. But the Jared Leto’s take on the character won’t be returning for the relaunch. Some are wondering Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the character could show up in the relaunch after the Joker’s massive success.

During a conversation with Variety, Joel Kinnaman was asked if Phoenix’s Joker could be included in the film.

“That would be incredible,” Kinnaman said. “I doubt it (laughs), I doubt it, but I mean that would be fun.”

“It was fantastic”, said Kinnaman. When asked if he thought he was cheating on Jared Leto he laughed and said “no.” They both laughed and then Kinnaman added “who?”. “I mean, Joaquin just crushed it. Wow. He is incredible. He is such an actor. It’s surprising to see that kind of performance in something that has a DC Wrapper because you know that’s a real art film.”

Kinnaman will be returning in The Suicide Squad as Rick Flag.

It seems that Leto’s Joker will go down as a great missed opportunity that fans will never see come to fruition.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the Leto felt ‘alienated and upset’ when he discovered that the studio approved director Todd Phillips’ idea for a solo Joker film from DC Extended Universe.

Back in 2017, Jared said he was ‘confused’ at this non-involvement in the character’s future. He said: ”I’m a little confused too, but yeah, there are a couple of things happening in the DC world… I loved the Joker. He’s a great character, an exciting role to play.’

‘It’s a big universe, and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honour of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. But there are other films in development, and I’m excited to see what comes from them.” said Leto.
