Spoiler Alert For Uncanny X-Men #21. It is written by Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Salvador Rosenberg with Salvador Larroca. A cover is by Whilce Portacio.

Marvel Comics have made the X-Men go a rough time in the recent years. They had to lose most of their team members to the misguided meddling of Nathan Grey. They also had to find themselves knee deep in a world which had doubled down on its mutant oppression and was even vaccinating humans so they don’t risk having mutant babies. This is all really grim, especially because since then the death toll has also increased thanks of the War of Realms. So at this point they are just waiting for any light at the end of this dark tunnel and it looks like they might have gotten that. But they have gotten it in a very unexpected way in Uncanny X-Men #21 from Marvel Comics.

The remaining X-Men head to the Hellfire Club to confront Emma Frost about wiping memories of her from their minds. There they also learn that she’s been directing them to pieces of the overall puzzle she deems to be important. It seems to have been not just out of self preservation but the preservation of mutantkind from O.N.E. Once Hope scans her mind then she reveals her full plan to the team.

They need an extra piece or two to make the plan happen and so they split up into teams to fulfill those needs. Eventually everyone returns to the Hellfire Club estate, but O.N.E is converging in on it too. So Emma and her team work on executing the plan while the other X-Men try to hold the front line from the advancing forces.

At one point the X-Men are fully overwhelmed but just as things look dire everyone stops in their place. Then one of the soldiers reaches out to Havok saying: “lemme help you up.” They help him up and then walk away, leaving everyone mighty confused regarding what actually happened.

The Actions Of Emma Frost And Its Consequences

After the above, Emma Frost then steps out with Cerebro in her hand and tells them:

“They don’t recognize us. They can’t see what we really are, and they don’t remember us. As of right now, the world at large has never even heard of mutants. We never existed. You’re welcome.”

So the mutants do remain but the world just isn’t aware of them now. This could mean that the X-Men will finally get some peace while they try and figure out how to get their other friends back. Of course, this is Emma Frost so this could very well be part of a much larger plan. If that is indeed the case or not, remains to be seen.

Uncanny X-Men #21 is in comic stores now.
